Unique in its nautical theme, snappy appearance and inventive field maneuvers, the Mariners quickly captured the attention of drum corps audiences everywhere. The repertoire of nautical classics and cleverly arranged seafarer’s themes created loyal fans for “The Big Blue Mob” and their “Fabulous Red Skirts” wherever corps competed. Audiences cheered wildly for the corps and enthusiastically anticipated its unique and entertaining special touches: the buglers’ “Sailor Sit”, Captain Crunches’ saber toss and the color guard’s “headchoppers”. To see the Mariners perform in competition was to witness “Showmanship at its Best”.

For the better part of two decades the Mariners competed in summer corps competitions, winter small corps contests and color guard shows around the U.S., thrilling audiences and claiming many titles and championships for the corps, the small corps, the color guard and members competing for titles in individual performance. The corps eventually disbanded in the 1970s, though Mariner alum formed a Senior Drill Team and performed in exhibition in the 1990’s, reliving for a time the enjoyment of the Mariner tradition.
